Originally founded in 1937 as the University of Travancore, the University of Kerala is one of the first 16 Universities in India which is situated in the erstwhile princely state of Travancore. In the past few decades, there has been an immense changes and transformation in the University in many ways. The University College, Thiruvananthapuram and the Trivandrum Observatory are regarded to be the earliest origins of the University. In 1834, the University College was initially founded as the Maharaja &rsquo's Free School by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal with Mr John Roberts. The college soon grew into a college in 1866 and was then affiliated to the Madras University.
